Can You Start A Ministry Without A Church?
Most churches have several ministries that allow members to serve. Yet, what if God is calling you to do something outside of the congregation? Can you start a ministry without a church?
The short answer is, yes.
What is Ministry?
The objective of a Christian ministry is to build the Kingdom of God through service. So whether you’re starting online or at your local shelter, the mission is more important than the location.
It’s imperative to listen to God. If He calls you to do work that’s not affiliated with a church, there is a reason. For example, you may need to minister to people outside of your locality. Whatever the case, it’s important to trust God and his timing. Obedience is always better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22).
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
Disciples of All Nations
Some people believe that spiritual leadership exists exclusively within the four walls of a church. However, Jesus was pretty clear when he said for his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations” — not just our friends and neighbors. God is calling us outside of our comfort zone and into the world to reach those that need him.

3 Instructions
When Jesus gave The Great Commission he was advising his disciples on how to carry on in his absence. He included three instructions. These commands illustrate what Christianity is all about; and should be our ultimate goal in ministry.
- Make more disciples
- Baptize believers
- Teach others how to obey God’s word
Your Greatest Ministry
Being a church member and fellowshipping with other believers enhances your faith (Hebrews 10:25), although it is possible to do the Lord’s work outside the church. In the end, the most significant ministry you have is how you choose to live your life. Instead of looking to meet your own needs, search for opportunities where you can meet the needs of others.
