How Suffering Creates Hope

Life grants us both good and bad days. So, it’s essential to know how to navigate hardship when it comes our way. How we respond to personal difficulty often reveals what we think of ourselves and what we think about God. When faced with suffering, do you beat yourself up, or are you encouraging and kind?

If you believe the promises of God, then you trust that the Lord will fight for you (Exodus 14:14); he will give you strength and power (Isaiah 40:29). You accept that there is nothing to fear (Isaiah 41:13), and if you’re not sure what to do, all you have to do is ask (James 1:5).

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. — Romans 5:3-4 (NIV)

Romans 5:3-4 talks about how there is glory in our suffering, that there is a path from suffering to hope. It’s a reminder that when days are dark and obstacles seem impossible, don’t give up. Instead, persevere, stand firm, and remain dedicated; victory is just around the corner.

How To Hang In There

Persevering through unhappiness or discomfort can be easier said than done. There are times when an issue appears so large that not giving up may feel like an impossibility. In moments of doubt, it helps to remember why the Lord started you on the journey in the first place. Realigning yourself with God’s purpose enables you to push through because you realize that it’s not about you. God has placed resiliency and power in every one of us. Doubt and confusion are distractions that aim to derail us from our true purpose if we let them.

Confidence In God

When you persevere through suffering, you build character because it forces you to mature and grow; petty things that used to be worrisome no longer pack a punch. This kind of boldness builds self-confidence and a little something called God-confidence — the security we have in God because of who he is.

God’s word is full of promises to keep us, watch over us, deliver us, and provide for us. When you develop your God-confidence, you expect these promises because of your relationship with God.

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. — James 1:4 (NIV)

It may seem easier to disappear when life gets tough. The idea of “suffering in silence” may be more appealing than letting loved ones see whatever unhappiness you may be experiencing.

However, you are never alone. God is always with you. Look to His word to find instruction that can lift your spirits and nourish your soul. You don’t need to shelter away from those you love.
